42nd Legion Scenario Paintball Team

The air is cool, the gear is ready, and the 42nd Legion is ready to take command of Warsaw Pact’s Czech Paratroopers once again. That’s right Fulda Gap is upon us and you need to get registered for the biggest Fulda Gap yet!

Larry “Iron Man” Rivenbark and NATO are looking to defend last year’s victory. Al “Aldva” Downs and the Warsaw Pact are looking to bring the victory back to it’s familiar home. We are back from Boss Paintball’s Band of Brothers: Battle of Bastogne game. Some scenario games give you a sense of “what if things had turned out differently” in history. Other games give you a taste of how historical events must have actually played out. This was a glimpse into just such a day in the life of Easy Company during the Battle of Bastogne.

The Bastogne game was Generalled by two powerhouses of scenario paintball – Xman of Team Boxer for Easy Company and Ferg of ODX for the German Panzer Division. It was a slugfest from the very start. German tanks proved their prowess on the field against Easy Company’s paratrooper tenacity. By the day’s end Easy Company still held Bastogne but at great cost.

I experienced the game as 1st Platoon’s Commander. 42nd Legion’s Phoenix Squad and Team Wemow filled the ranks. These troopers gave their all, as we were constantly under barrage from German tanks. Paintball tanks may not seem that imposing, but given the amount of punishment they can unleash in a salvo you’d still want to give it a wide berth. My Anti-tank troopers and infantry support were constantly on line doing their best to stop the flow of armor into our A.O. In the end, 1st Platoon was tasked with the first line of defense as the tanks rolled up to take Bastogne. But they didn’t get in!

Big thank you’s to the teams that made Easy Company as well as congratulations to the Germans for a hard fought victory. I would also like to thank and congratulate our hometown boys and brothers in 1st Platoon – Team Wemow for earning Easy Company’s Most Valuable Team Award. I would like to thank everyone on the team that voted and for having such a great list of nominees this year – they all were outstanding! Please join me in congratulating Daniel “Gunner” Richards as our recipient of 42nd Legion’s 2010 Legionnaire of the Year!

Background

Daniel Richards first met up with us at some open play weekends in mid-2009 at Cull Holler. He, his wife Teryn and friend Chris came out to try the field after seeing the newspaper article about the place. After the day of play and given his background in the Naval Reserve he was hooked. After a few weekends of playing alongside us and impressing us with his skills, he was interested in trying out larger scale scenario games. With Fulda Gap ’09 mere weeks away and seeing his abilities on the field, we were happy to have him along with us.

Team-player

Looking back, Fulda Gap ’09 was an amazing feat for us. We were running as many new folks to the event as we had seasoned players. But we all pulled together, due to great team-player personalities like Daniel’s. His mellow and easy-going manner were a welcome break amidst the chaos of herding players in a large scale scenario game. By the end of the weekend he asked me if he could join the team. I couldn’t help but grin and tell him that he already was.

Gunner

Early 2010, Daniel was a fully fledged Legionnaire, attending practices, scenario events and helping me locate great deals on equipment for the team. Unfortunately in June he suffered a motorcycle accident that left him severely injured. He made a tremendous recovery; however his mobility and paintball career have been significantly affected. Nevertheless, he continues to be a true team player. Even though he couldn’t be with us in person at Fulda Gap 2010 his presence certainly was. He lent all his available equipment and supplies so that our new players without gear would be adequately equipped for the event. Daniel’s generosity allowed for at least 4 more players to participate that otherwise would not have been able to. Daniel illustrates that it is just as important what you do off the field as it is on the field to make one a Legionnaire of the Year.

For your team spirit, both on and off the field, thank you Daniel “Gunner” Richards, you’ve earned it and we look forward to your return!

Well, they say every dog has his day and NATO turned it into a weekend. Yes, the mighty Warsaw Pact allowed NATO it’s first and only victory in 5 years. Don’t be fooled though, it was a tough fight from start to finish.

The weekend was not without it’s bright spots though. Fulda Gap 2010 debuted the new Tactical Paintball Shooter Association Challenge (TPSAC) and First Runner Up for the Unlimited Master Class was our very own Dave “S1TH” Atkins. Our Legionnaires were the first to arrive at the Warsaw Pact Entry point in full battle rattle and won the Ready to Rumble prize pack – a Sly Profit Thermal Mask courtesy of Valken went to Whitney “Everlast” Smith, a Tippmann TPX pistol courtesy of Tippmann Sports went to Richard “Industrialhed” Shorter and several Proconnect 3′s, Proconnect3 remote lines and remote line covers courtesy of Psiworx went to the rest of the Legion.

At the final awards ceremony the 42nd Legion took Warsaw Pact’s Spirit of the Motherland award as well as their 2nd year in a row as Warsaw Pact’s Most Valuable Team award. Within the 42nd Legion Jeff “TinkTink” Madison was presented with our first ever “Enforcer” award (a 5lb sledgehammer) for the relentless hammering he delivered to NATO over the weekend.  London “FourD” Lewis was presented our battle proud Czech Flag as 42nd Legion’s Most Valuable Player for Fulda Gap 2010.

We also want to recognize the efforts of our new teammates in the 42nd Legion and other teams that made up the Czech Paratroopers this year. New to the 42nd Legion’s Scenario Squad, we’d like to welcome: Whitney “Everlast” Smith, Rebecca “Diehard” Farish,  Richard “Industrialhed” Shorter, Tim “Toolman” Taylor, Ricky “Rickybobby” Dooley, and Thomas “Catalyst” McNulty.  Great big thank yous to Team Federation EX: Brooks “KC81″ Schultz, Brittany “RedOctober” McDonough and Jonathan “OldCrow” Foust. From our good friends in Chaos Parade: Paul Brenneman and Austin Renkiewicz. Also want to give a shout out to the walk-ons and unaffiliated players that helped fill out our ranks – your efforts are appreciated.

Last, but certainly not least and quite possibly more important than all the awards – we were able to completely sell out of our Czech Paratrooper fundraiser patches and raised over $100 for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Congratulations team and Czech Paratroopers, you all were terrific!

Job well done!  Next year the victory will return to the Motherland!

You guessed it – Fulda Gap 2010 is this weekend! The 42nd Legion is packed up and ready to hit the road for the biggest Fulda Gap yet! It’s all a scenario player could ask for: a target rich environment (1200+ players), a Warsaw Pact ready to claim its 5th straight victory and NATO is stacked up and ready to deliver a fight. This is one for the record books folks!

Warsaw Pact’s 2009 Most Valuable Team – 42nd Legion will be resuming their role as the Czech Paratroopers. We’ll be in it doing our part to secure Warsaw Pact’s 5-peat streak!

Nathan “HoChiMan” Wright, our other winner of “Legionnaire of the Year”, is the 42nd Legion’s Executive Officer, Coach and Squad Leader of our primary assault squad – Teufelhunde.

Background

I first met Nathan while we were working at the local hospital. He was on break checking a paintball website that I also frequented. We started up a conversation about the sport and it’s been going ever since. I learned of his and his family’s military background and their recently disbanded paintball team – Teufelhunde. The 42nd Legion had just been formed in November of 2007 and we wanted experienced military folks to help us shape up as a military simulation paintball team. This seemed like perfect match. The first meeting with the team was in January of 2008. We all later attended a Cops Vs. Robbers scenario game together at Big Pearl Paintball and the deal was sealed. Teufelhunde would be recreated as a squad within the 42nd Legion with Nathan, his brother Ethan and father William as the core.

Executive Officer

Time for Fulda Gap had rolled back around. This was our first year as Czech Paratroopers for the Warsaw Pact, a unit that had previously been populated with only walk-on players. The team was at full capacity and I had my hands and head full of administrative duties. I needed a sound and experienced field leader to take up the reins if I were eliminated on the field – enter Nathan. He provided the field and tactical experience for the 42nd while I coordinated the other players and teams. This formula worked so well we decided to keep it and have been award winning ever since.

HoChiMan

The call sign was established long before we met and was a play on words developed by former teammates. Nate is notorious for attacking unsuspecting targets from highly unlikely places, thus his teammates said being around him was “like being on the Ho Chi Minh trail” you never know where he’ll be. I’ve personally seen him pull himself out of places no typical paintballer would even consider going near. And, consequently, we’ve had to rinse him off several times before allowing him back into camp. If there is any kind of water on the field, this Marine will find it and have you eliminated before you ever knew what hit you!
